Guéganne`s Statement
Continuation....
My fundamental philosophy
is that the folklore and the Aboriginal legends will serves as a starting
point in this new series of paintings. I do not project to illustrate
specifically the legends, but rather to capture the spirit of the creative
evolution and the structure of the universe as seen by natives. This way
the sharing of concepts is done on a more intellectual level and I also
wish to share my spiritual concepts with the viewers. Fortunately, I
always accepted the validity of my dreams and visions. As an artist, I
continue to use this dreaming reality; which is the essence of my
creativity. As an artist with aboriginal roots, I am deeply interested to
include/understand the state of consciousnesses that are connected to the
role of artists. The lessons I received from my maternal grandmother
regarding indigenous tribes when I was a child, has forever changed and
influenced my values. Since I am involve in the process of creation, these
changed state of consciousnesses allows a incessant flow of images into my
reality.
My spirit touches hundreds of collective concepts, before I
am able to distinguish an attraction or an affinity that appears in my
conscience. Once a concept is accepted, I begin a process to translate the
scheme into visual representations and images.
Sometimes a painting or a sculpture is a complement of an
image that I see in my spirit. Occasionally, just by changing my center of
concentration makes it possible for the images to emerge in my reality.
The images that I paint always astonish me!
We should not restrict ourselves with traditional images; it
is necessary to allow art the freedom to advance. Artists of today must do
more than preserve their own culture; they must increase their creative
capacities. This is their destiny in life, an inalienable right to express
and share their concepts with people.
I never accepted the limitations of style, medium or
contents in my paintings. I believe that the limitation of groups prevents
the creative process. With the free use of color, of medium, textures and
an experimental variety of media, I express the realities of my dreams.
Too often we accept the opinions and advises of others, of
what is right or wrong in our creativity. I think it is necessary to have
confidence in our own personal morality and to remain perpetually faithful
to our explicit beliefs. At the same time, I do not believe in the
validity of absolute laws, sometimes this can limit creativity. I accept
as true, that we need discipline. Discipline is necessary to explore
freedom. The size of a canvas does not limit freedom; it only contains it.
Freedom in creativity exists only by discipline.
To be an undeniable artist, is not only talent, there is
also commitment and perseverance. We all have a certain amount of
creativity. The key to express ourselves in art is to define what we want
to create and then make a commitment. To create, it is necessary to have
an enormous amount of patience. It is especially necessary to learn by our
errors and to have "once again", lots and lots of perseverance. If all
these processes are respected, you will create a work of art more
marvelous than you can imagine.
Each day I try to learn more about the process of creating.
When people ask me what is my favorite sculpture or my best painting? I
always answer; it is the one, I am currently creating. I refuse to
contemplate my past work or to remain hung up with things that I already
achieved. I estimate that each day is better than the previous because I
acquires more experience, knowledge, and wisdom.
In my opinion, colors have enormous feelings; I consider
certain colors more therapeutic than others. In my estimation colors
nuances are similar to music, vitality, creation and energy. I let colors
speak or hum to me before selecting them for a painting and then I utilize
all that functions to propagate the colors on the canvas.
I don't always like to explain the contents in my painting.
At times, you may see some things that I have not seen! Your
interpretation and the significance that you confer on my paintings are of
primary importance to me. Some resonate to my paintings without knowing
why and they do not require any reasons. They are pleased to view my works
and what they awaken in them. They answer to art on an intuitive level and
they exploit the symbols and retranslate them in their own concepts. It is
how my work simulates people and their environments that justify the
importance of my work. I wish my art to awaken in the viewers, their own
creative potential and the knowledge that this potential then can be
employed to preserve the Earth and the good of all humanity.
If there is a difference vis-à-vis myself and others in art;
it is that I spent years to rectify my creativity. I used my artistic
capacity and knowledge to illustrate the beauty, which I find daily in
everyday life. By my art, I also wish to share with humanity this beauty
that enriches all our lives.
I enhance myth and creativity by employing a new personal
style in my art. I express my own interpretations of myths to come. I
refuse to limit myself to traditional ways to express myself. In this way,
my art is remove from the current traditionalists works.
There's joy of exploration, an unlimited source of
inspiration and a feeling of release from the technological limitations
and the traditional approaches in art. Since I am not involve in the
conscious manipulation of images, it's always an astonishment to me, that
I have the capability to create a painting which is produced in a
transformed state of consciousness. There is a direction of total
participation and interconnectedness with all aspects of creativity.
Sometimes a trace of paint from the brush will become lyrical.
Occasionally, a color or a texture seems to stimulate my sensory
conscience, (odor, taste, hearing). For this reason I am completely
devoted to the creative spirit, thus allowing it to predestine my art on
all levels.
When I work on a painting using an Aboriginal or Acadian
scheme, I perceive an impression of a conscience that touches many
traditions, which should be restored and included in the celebrations and
rituals of today. The rituals representations of our ancestors
must be continued in the art so our responsibility as participants in
creation and our consciousness with our ancestors will be preserve. Like
the majority of natives, Panwapskewiyik (Penobscot) and Mi'kmaq believes
that their response to creation had an effect on reality; they were not
the forsaken victims of a capricious Universe.By creating rituals and by
keeping their traditions, the Aboriginals people affirm their direction,
belonging and their participations in all of creation. Even the quantum
theory recognizes that the observer becomes participants in scientific
experiments. Humanity must be reconnected with the forces of the skies,
the earth and with our ancestors to reconstitute the balance of life.
When we deny our capacities to answer to the call to preserve order,
our part of creating reality is weakened and reality itself is weakened.
